Vincent
(the art of living)

The mourners did not stand sobbing at my grave,
they found my cradle first, on infertile land,
blinded by grief; an old, used up woman gave
it them, elbows in her lap: the child of sand.

I saw the dawns, the amber fields at daybreak,
my glance was only broken by a farm cart;
much later sparkling nights kept me wide awake,
lying on steel beds, with just myself, apart.

Then the Devil came, or St Luke, to test me:
was the ruffle of my coloured brush strokes brash
and mild enough? How my weather-beaten head

yearned for the barren North, how things obsessed me,
Arles women had broken my heart in a flash,
the cart that had been promised me became my bed.
