Drift (een studie in vier sonnetten)

1.

De potloden verkruimelden in je handen;

Door ieder genegeerd, hun doodsheid lapidair;
Machteloos gesticuleren, nooit verkoren

Armen hielden vrouw noch kind, hun zwarte repliek
Zoemde in je hersens, hun kritiek bleef koeren.
Je werd dictator in je eigen republiek.

2.

 Rage (a study in four sonnets)

1.

Your skill in putting thoughts on paper going,
you found your pencils crumbling in your grip;
words came from your mouth in drips, had stopped flowing,
with phrases stumbling over sticky lips.

The silent scream wreaked havoc on your ear;
ignored in stony apathy by all,
you gestured vainly, unwatched and uncheered
by the timelessly vulgar: no one’s ball.

You had to play with shadows for the blind,
and for deaf audiences you sang your song.
What you achieved was never seen, your strong

arms held wife nor child; buzzing in your mind,
their harsh replies kept cooing what went wrong.
Czar of a republic, you stayed behind.

2.

Soft throbs near the temples, almost neglected,
come first. Naively, as if you’re letting sink
in what’s coming, denial still looks like a chink
in the wall: can forgiveness be collected?

The gap is too small, though, just an illusion
of freedom, for your hand now trembles, pulsates;
your skin breathes pantingly, blood accelerates;
hues turn harsh; smell that stench of smells in fusion.

Punishment is imposed, penance is done, not
under wordy codes of law that back away;
not fake, but real and brutish, on the spot.

Thoughts are a grey bed of nails, they just display
your fears and doubts. Therefore, obey the god
of action to find nobody in your way.

  3.

A ball lightning hits your veins, explodes in flares
of fear, which might as well be darts of delight,
who knows? They find you, not going anywhere.
Say: you or the other, who’s more terrified?

Then there is a flash inside your crosswise nose,
a pungent smell that strikes you between the eyes.
You stop wanting anything, your free will goes
away; it’s do or die, no thoughts, no advice.

This is euphoria and profound distress too;
victim and hangman cannot be disengaged,
they are the same, subject to the din. Despair

cries out, echoes like a woodpecker, enraged,
slashing at the tree of knowledge, unaware
of morals, barbaric, true. It’s real. It’s you.

4.

With your high slowly fading, in the interspace
of cackling silence, of loud calm beyond compare,
you float, your heavy body lost without a trace,
as if, intangibly, warm winds kiss through your hair.

You want to remain there, transcendence is cocaine,
but passing cars, conversations and the faces
of passers-by pull you back; once again, you sustain
your looks by your surroundings, by places.

Now it’s back to the terror of options, of course:
the cast shadows of guilt and blame, the moral scales.
The injuries, defined by the other, by force

of habit stamped with yellow impatience, are nails
that grow inwards, you are a giant of details:
the seeds of  rage to come, still shrouded as remorse.
